Main article: Thunderball copyright ownership controversy
The ownership of the SPECTRE organisation and its characters had been at the centre of long-standing litigation starting in 1961 between Ian Fleming and Kevin McClory over the film rights to the novel Thunderball after Fleming incorporated elements of an undeveloped film script written by McClory into Thunderball. In 1963 Fleming settled out of court with McClory, which awarded McClory the film rights and in turn enabled him to become a producer for the 1965 film Thunderball—with Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman as executive producers—and the non-canonical film Never Say Never Again in 1983.[N 1] Under the terms of the settlement, the literary rights stayed with Fleming.[9]
In November 2013 MGM and the McClory estate formally settled the issue with Danjaq, LLC—the parent company of Eon Productions—and MGM acquiring the full copyright film rights to the concept of SPECTRE and all of the characters associated with it.

This article is about the production background of the James Bond films. For synopses, awards, box office information and other statistical data, see List of James Bond films. For the various portrayals of the character, see James Bond filmography.
The James Bond film series is a British series of spy films based on the fictional character of MI6 agent James Bond, "007", who originally appeared in a series of books by Ian Fleming. It is one of the longest continually-running film series in history, having been in on-going production from 1962 to the present (with a six-year hiatus between 1989 and 1995). In that time Eon Productions has produced 23 films, most of them at Pinewood Studios. With a combined gross of over $6,000 million to date, the films produced by Eon constitute the third-highest-grossing film series, behind the Harry Potter and Marvel Cinematic Universe films.[1] (Accounting for the effects of inflation the Bond films have amassed $13.8 billion in July 2013 prices.[2]) Six actors have portrayed 007 in the Eon series, the latest being Daniel Craig.
